Stained Chromosomes

Required for all PhD/MS students in the Department of Genetics

  1. All students must carry at least 12 graduate credit hours a semester (9 in summer); preferably, 18 every semester.
  2. All students must enroll in GENE 8880 (Research Communication; 1 credit hour) every semester in residence until the semester in which a student gives his or her exit seminar, unless the student has written exemption for a semester from the graduate coordinator due to a conflict.
  3. All students must take GRSC 8550 (Responsible Conduct of Research). For most students this will be fulfilled as part of the ILS first semester requirements.
  4. Prior to or simultaneous with serving as a teaching assistant, students must enroll in GRSC 7770 (preferably Norris Armstrong's section in spring) or LLED 7769 (1-3 credit hours). 
  5. Doctoral and master's students must enroll in 3 credit hours of GENE 9300 (Doctoral Dissertation) or GENE 7300 (Master's Thesis), respectively, the semester they graduate.
  6. All students must take at least 20 hours of 8000 level courses, and at least 30 hours total including GENE 9000/9300 or GENE 7000/7300.

Required for all Genetics students and/or Training Grant-supported students

In addition to the above general requirements, we require that all Genetics graduate students and students supported on the NIH T32 Training Grant in Genetics receive training in all areas pertinent to modern genetics research. This includes:

• GENE 8100, Foundations of Genetic Analysis (4 credits)

• A minimum of 3 credit hours of quantitative training, chosen from this list of courses.

• A minimum of 6 credit hours of genetics electives, chosen from this list of courses.

• GENE 8300, Introduction to Scientific Research Writing (1 credit), during Fall of the second year (starting with the 2019 cohort for genetics students, and starting with the 2023 cohort for training grant students)

• GENE 8620, Rigor and Reproducibility in Genetics Research (1 credit), during Spring of the first year (starting with the 2020 cohort)

Course substitutions may be approved based on a written petition to the Graduate Affairs Committee.

Program of Study

A Preliminary Doctoral Program of Study Acrobat form should be completed by the student and filed within the department by the beginning of fall semester of the second year. The Final Doctoral Program of Study will be made in consultation with the advisory committee and the e-form should be completed and submitted to the Graduate School at the beginning of spring semester of the second year.

For master's level students, the Program of Study will be made in consultation with the advisory committee and the e-form should be completed and submitted to the Graduate School by the end of the second semester of graduate study. Double Dwag masters students should submit the completed program of study form their first semester of graduate study by the published deadline.
